For those of us who don’t consider ourselves skinny people, they can seem so mysterious or have an almost magical ability to stay thin. We mistakenly believe that they don’t struggle with issues like emotional eating the way the rest of us do. But the habits of thin people can be modeled after and duplicated. If you model thin people’s habits and general attitude about food, you can start losing weight and become one size smaller.
The general attitudes of skinny people about food is much different than the rest of us who often struggle with losing weight. Overweight people tend to be preoccupied with food, focusing on how, when and the amount of food they eat. They tend to think of food in terms of a diet where there are restrictions galore. They tend to define and label food choices as either good or bad, this or that. Those of us who struggle with weight will either starve ourselves, follow some crazy diets, limit the amount of food, or binge eat until our stomach feels painfully stuffed. Can you relate to that “bread coma” feeling? The emotional turmoil with perceptions of diet failures keeps them eating for emotional comfort.
In general, thin people have a much more relaxed and better relationship with food. They often don’t clean their plates and will choose a satisfied stomach feeling over being painfully stuffed. They are much more aware of how their body feels and how much their stomach can handle. They recognize when to stop eating, understanding how their body feels when it is full with the right amount of food. Thin people can more honestly rate themselves on a fullness scale of 1 to 10 (one meaning starving, whereas 10 is painfully stuffed). They understand that eating at a slow, steady pace is better for their bodies and they can stop eating when they are on a fullness scale of 5 or 6 versus 8 or 10. Imitating some of these habits can lead to more satisfactory results. So enjoy eating your meals slowly; let the taste of a good meal linger in your mouth and become more aware of yourself and stop when your stomach feels satisfied.
Thin people understand that hunger isn’t an emergency. They know and can tolerate slight hunger pangs without any qualms; they know lack of food right at that moment is not a 9-1-1 situation. Hunger pangs will come and go. In addition to food, the beverage choices of skinny people can also lead to healthier habits. They normally drink clear, refreshing water over soda or juice. They tend to drink about 8-10 glasses a day. Are you aware that most people mistake being thirsty for hunger pangs? It’s a good idea to drinking more water before turning to an unhealthy snack.
It’s also important to know that thin people are not immune to feeling the blues and stress of life. You may be surprised to know that thin people do sometimes emotionally overeat. The big difference is that thin people are generally more aware of this feeling and recognize that they need to do something different. They refuse to continue to be a victim of food and can stop themselves from continuously eating. They value and honor themselves by doing something to relax with the goal of getting back into that positive state of mind. They practice self-hypnosis and use suggestions to change their state of mind to what works for them. They have the self-control gene that allows them to have restraint and stop eating when they are not hungry and when their stomach feels satisfied.
Thin people are creatures of habit when it comes to their food choices. There are few surprises to their meals. Thin people tend to eat more predictably. Meals are planned and they eat more fruit daily. Now is the time to develop good habits and stick with them. Learn to get into a positive food groove of having well-planned, predictable choices when it comes to your daily food and beverage intake and aspire to a healthier, thin lifestyle.
