“Your ideas drive me crazy; maybe you should concentrate a bit more and stop coming up with all these ideas! You are so annoying. I’ve had enough of you, and it’s not just me; everyone hates you,” my employee shouted at the end of the meeting. She slammed the door in my face, leaving me to sit alone in the room.
I sat silently in shock. So many questions went through my head. So many emotions. I was angry, upset, sad, and confused all at the same time.
I stared out the window. What just happened? Why did it happen? I start to question myself. Am I really that terrible at running my business? I have done so much for my staff. I am always there for them; I bend forward and backward to make them all happy. I spend countless hours training them and paying them good wages. We spend time together. I’m their friend as much as their boss…or at least that’s what I thought.
So how could she say this to me? How could she hate her job so much?
I start to think about my hiring process and the way I built my team.
Many years ago, when I built my first team, I didn’t put much effort into the hiring process. I didn’t have the funds to hire experts, so I hired anyone looking for a job. Since I was not paying much at the start, I wasn’t expecting much either.
My business grew rapidly, and I was hiring more and more people. After a year in business, I had a big team and a big problem.
I was training everyone on everything, not having time to automate the process. My team got used to me giving them step-by-step tasks to do and they needed constant supervision. If something didn’t work the way it should, there was constant criticism. No positive viewpoints or helpful contributions to make things better. It was down to me to think ahead, find solutions to problems, learn a new way of improving the business, and try to make everyone happy. I created a bottleneck and was exhausted. I sold my first business, and I was convinced that I would NEVER hire ANYONE again.
Over the years, I have trained myself on the ways to build a successful team, and since that first experience, I have helped hundreds of businesses create outstanding teams. Hiring the right people is crucial to the growth of your business. You are building a relationship for years to come, and you want to build it with the right people, protecting your energy and the energy of your business. Skills can be learned if you attract people with the right attitude.
If you are ready to start hiring your first employees, I want you to consider the following four qualities of a great team member:
– They believe in your vision for the business – They see your picture, and they are ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen. They are excited about it. Your combined energy attracts incredible new team members.
– They can do several jobs simultaneously – At the start, you may not be able to hire experts to do one task so look for people who can fulfill several jobs, from admin tasks and social media to customer support and IT. The more your business grows, the more specialized those employees can become. If your employee can grow with you and get exposure to different parts of your business, the skills will develop, and they can take on more of a leadership role while your company grows.
– They get things done and do not shy away from finding a different way to do things – Look for employees who are not afraid of trying new ways to get the job done. Who won’t stop when they hit the tarrier barrier. They are going to kick right through it with new ways of tackling problems without your constant involvement.
– They want to grow, and they invest in self-development – Look for people who are eager to grow and take the time to invest in themselves. People who come up with new ideas to grow your business and are not solely dependent on your knowledge to help the business grow.
Take your time when hiring a member of your team. Don’t rush the process. Write down the exact description of the ideal team member that you would love to attract to your business. Know exactly who you are looking for so that when they walk through the door you will take notice.
For baby Sara, big brother James, entrepreneurs ready to build a successful team, and whoever needed to hear this message today.
